Volleyball Suffers First Setback

Box Score SONOMA, CA (September 13, 2013)—The Hawai'i Pacific volleyball team (5-1) suffered its first loss of the season, in game two of the Seawolf Spike, falling to host #24 Sonoma State (5-1) in straight sets (13-25, 21-25, 23-25).

Set one was a battle early on. An Elizabeth Culpepper kill put the Sea Warriors within two points at 9-7, but Sonoma State would put together a 13-4 run to take the opening frame 25-13.

HPU recovered in set two, which featured 12 ties and five lead changes, as the two sides struggled to break away from each other. HPU took the lead midway through the set when freshman sensation Pomai Recca registered four straight kills to make it 16-15. Like the first set, the Seawolves ended the second on a strong run, going on a 10-5 run to close it out at 25-21.

Carrying their momentum over, Sonoma State took an early 7-3 lead in the third set. Undeterred, the Sea Warriors battled back to tie the set at 12 on an ace by Amanda Moriarty, forcing the home team to call a timeout. The set would remain close, but Sonoma State prevailed taking set three 25-23, and the match 3-0.

Recca led the way again for the Sea Warriors with a game-high 14 kills while Chelsey Buyuan chipped in a game-high 24 digs. Marie Fujii finished the game with a team-high 24 assists.

After two games on Friday, the Sea Warriors return to the court for the final two games of the SeaWolf Spike on Saturday. Game one features a matchup against Cal State University-Stanislaus at 11:15 a.m. PST before a rematch with California State- Chico at 3:45 p.m. PST.
