Errors Costly in Volleyball Loss

Box Score SONOMA, CA (September 14, 2013) – The Hawai'i Pacific Volleyball Team (5-2) understandably didn't answer its wake-up call on Saturday morning after having played two matches in an eight-hour span on Friday. The Sea Warriors were dumped by Cal State Stanislaus (2-5) in three sets (19-25, 19-25, 28-30) at the Seawolf Spike Tournament.

Much of the damage was self-inflicted as the Sea Warriors had 30 attack errors as opposed to just 14 by Stanislaus. Add in three service errors, two receiving errors, three blocking errors and two ball handing errors and the conditions were right for an upset.

HPU fell behind 10-4 in the first set before showing some life with a 5-0 run to close the gap to one. However, with the score at 13-12 Stanislaus scored five of the next six points to open up the set. The lead was whittled down to three at 22-18, but it was too late.

The Sea Warriors bounced back in the second set, leading 12-8 on a kill by Pomai Recca. However, Stanislaus put together a 6-1 run shortly after and followed that up with a 5-0 jaunt later in set to enjoy a 22-16 lead. The teams then traded points with CSUS taking a 2-0 set lead.

The third set was close early on before Stanislaus took a 15-11 lead. Recca then cranked out three consecutive kills and Hannah Schuett tied the match at 15 with a kill of her own. After a CSUS score, HPU reeled off a 5-0 run to take a 20-16 lead. From there, Stanislaus kept coming back, tying the match at 23, 25, 26, 27, and 28 before ending the proceedings.

Recca led all competitors with 18 kills. Schuett had a team-high 28 assists and Chelsey Buyuan led the Sea Warriors with 22 digs. Recca was also good again on defense with 21 digs.

HPU will close out the road trip later today at 3:45 p.m. PST against Cal State Chico.
