Box Score HONOLULU, HI (September 21, 2013) - In the shortest of road trips, the Hawai'i Pacific Volleyball Team made short work of Chaminade (3-4, 0-2) to extend its record to 8-2 and 2-0 in PacWest Conference play (25-23, 25-17, 25-20).
A night after the Sea Warriors had trouble closing out their opponent early, HPU had no such issue against cross-town rival Chaminade. Like the night before, the HPU block was suffocating. HPU totaled 11 blocks in just three sets. Â Â Â
"Our blocking was really good tonight, it was a big positive against Chaminade," said HPU Head Coach
Daryl Kapis. "I was happy to see
Elizabeth Culpepper (2.5 blocks) and
Christina Furrer (4 blocks) have success, they had monster blocking nights."
As strong as the block was,
Kasey Thompson was just as good a hitter. The sophomore had 11 kills on just 16 swings with only one error for an other worldly .625 hitting percentage. Â Â
"
Kasey Thompson was exceptional, we did some new things with her that worked very well," commented Kapis.
The first set was very close as Chaminade was determined to defend its home court. The match was tied at 18 when Furrer put HPU back in the lead. HPU opened the lead up to 23-19, but the Silverswords ratted off four consecutive points to tie the set at 23. Thompson put HPU ahead for good with a kill and a Chamainde hitting error ended it.
The second set would provide much less intrigue as HPU jumped out to a 5-0 lead and never looked back. HPU led 20-10 at one juncture.
In the third set, HPU jumped out to an early 7-1 lead. Chaminade would reduce the lead to three points several times including at 22-19, but two Thompson kills and one of
Amanda Moriarty's three aces of the day ended the match.
HPU will host fourth ranked BYU-Hawaii on Thursday at St. Andrew's Priory at 7:00 pm.
