Box Score WAIPIO, HI (September 8, 2013)—The Hawai'i Pacific Men's Soccer Team (1-0-1) battled to a 0-0 tie against Cal State San Bernardino (1-0-2), under the lights at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park in front of a packed crowd on Sunday night. Senior goalkeeper
Mael Lefebvre picked up his fourth career shutout in the draw.
The Sea Warriors knew they were in for a tough offensive challenge against the notoriously stingy Coyote defense, which has yet to allow a goal through the first three games of the season.
With both sides playing tough defensively, neither side could manage a shot on goal until the 29th minute when Lefebvre made the first of his game-high three saves. After dominating possession throughout the opening period, the Sea Warriors put some pressure on the San Bernardino keeper, registering three shots in the closing minutes, but failed to breakthrough. The two sides went to the half in a scoreless tie.
In the second period, the Sea Warriors continued to control the action looking to break the deadlock. Senior
Alejandro Porras sent a shot just over the bar in the 79th minute and junior
Truls Henrik Lystad nearly beat the CSUSB keeper in the 84th minute off a strong run from his left back position.
Lefebvre was at his best in the second period making a pair of big saves, but he got a little help from freshman
Erik Kemsies who made a clutch save of his own while guarding the near post on a Coyote corner kick in the 52nd minute.
With one last burst of energy, Hawaii Pacific would get three more chances in the extra periods, but failed to solve the CSUSB keeper leading to a scoreless tie.
After 110 minutes HPU held an 11-8 advantage in shots including a 3-1 advantage in overtime. The Sea Warriors also earned four corner kicks versus the Coyotes' one.
After the match HPU senior center back
Kamali Webson commented on his team's performance and the defensive unit's capabilities going forward, "We have a very good team here and we're very strong 1-15. We're building chemistry on the back line and if we do our job, teams will have a tough time beating us."
Head Coach
Chris Fisher talked defense after the match as well, "San Bernardino is a very good team and tough to break down, evidence by not being scored on all season. We stressed defensive responsibilities tonight and felt the offense would take care of itself."
Looking ahead Fisher added, "The defense was great, but we need to be more creative going forward. Tonight was a step in the right direction towards becoming a complete team."
After a two-game home stand, the Sea Warriors now head to the mainland for a pair of games, beginning with 2012 national semifinalist Simon Fraser on September 12th in Burnaby, British Columbia. Kick off in scheduled for 7:30 PM PST.
