Volleyball Earns Win Over Sea Lions

Box Score HONOLULU, HI (October 16, 2014) – In nature, Sharks and Sea Lions are natural enemies with the Shark being the predator. On the volleyball court, it was also the Sharks who caught the Sea Lions on Thursday night in downtown Honolulu. Hawai'i Pacific (8-8, 6-4) beat Point Loma (12-7, 9-2) in four sets (25-17, 23-25, 25-21, 25-22) in front of the home crowd.

Trailing 12-11 in the first set, HPU snapped out of it and took eight of the next 10 points to take control. The spurt gave HPU a 19-14 lead and from there HPU cruised to an easy victory.

The visitors rebounded in the second set, leading most of the way. HPU tied the set at 22 and 23 late but Loma slammed the door with back-to-back kills.

Point Loma controlled the third set early before HPU tied it at eight. From there it was a seesaw affair with 11 ties in the frame. Leading 22-21, the Shark got kills from Pomai Recca and Haley Doerfler before Doerfler and Tenika Wentworth combined on a block to end it.

The Sharks came out firing in the fourth set and led 8-2 before Loma could catch its breath. The lead was trimmed to two points at one juncture, but HPU was happy to trade points and coast to the win.

Recca had one of her best matches at HPU with 19 kills and 18 digs to go along with a .333 hitting percentage. Elizabeth Culpepper was great, hitting a video game-like .375 on her 14 kills. Wentworth did a great job running the show earning 50 assists as the team hit a collective .313.

HPU is back in action tomorrow night against Azusa Pacific, first serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at St. Andrew's Priory.
