Women’s Soccer Wins with Late Goal

Box Score KANEOHE, HI (October 17, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Women's Soccer Team (7-4-1, 4-3) won its last game before  traveling to the mainland with 2-1 against BYU-Hawai'i (3-9, 2-5) on Friday afternoon at Atherton Field.

The game started anything but good for the Sharks. Just 54 seconds in the game, a cross pass from the left side rebounded off the HPU keeper inside the six yard box right in front of a BYU-H player who grabbed the early lead.

Following was a balanced game with chances for both teams. In the sixth minute, Erika Ellis fired a good shot on the BYU-H goal, but the keeper saved the shot.

Although HPU was more active, the Sharks struggled with BYU-H's defense that did not allow much space to create chances.

After the changeover, the Sharks came out aggressive. With Stefanie Catone, Ashlyn Ubongen and Ellis, Head Coach Gina Brewer was banking on three forwards to tie the game.

In the 64th minute, Coach Brewer's offensive strategy paid off. After a beautiful pass through from Catone, Ashlyn Ubongen chipped the ball over the goalie, making it 1-1.

The Sharks tried hard to put another goal away, but BYU-H, mostly focusing on counter attacks, also had more good chances.

In the 83rd minute, Lei Kaina fired a powerful shot from just inside the box, but the BYU-H goalie bailed out her team with a world-class diving save.

Finally, in the 87th minute, Ellis was able to win it for her team with a good volley shot over the keeper from inside the box. It was Ellis' sixth goal of the season.

"We gave up an unfortunate early goal, but the team stayed composed and fought back to get a gutsy comeback win today!" said Brewer after the game.

The statistics present an advantage in shots (11-9) and shots on target (8-5) for the Sharks. Sharks keeper Kelby Boswell finished with six saves. Ellis and Ubongen were active with four shots each.

The Sharks now travel to the mainland to play three road games. The first game will take place on October 21st against Holy Names University in Oakland.
