Volleyball Hits Over .300 in Win

Box Score BELMONT, CA (October 5, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Volleyball Team (5-7, 3-3) won its second match of its current Bay Area road trip, a 3-1 (25-16, 22-25, 25-15, 25-23) victory over Notre Dame de Namur University (0-14, 0-7).

The Sharks overwhelmed the home team right out of the gate; HPU grabbed an 8-1 lead in the opening set before the fans could even find their seats. HPU never looked back, carrying a lead of at least four points for the entire set. After a kill from Elizabeth Culpepper, HPU grabbed the biggest lead of the set at 22-11.

NDNU responded in the second set to even the match at one. The set was tight throughout, with HPU leading 19-18, the Argos took five of the next six points to claim a 23-20 lead. The Sharks fought back to make it a one point set at 23-22 but the comeback fizzled there.

Revitalized with the win, NDNU played HPU tough to start the third set. The Argos led 10-8 before HPU absolutely caught fire. The Sharks reeled off 12 consecutive points, aided by five Pomai Recca kills, to double up the home team at 20-10 before closing out the set.

Despite still looking for their first win of the season, the Argos gave HPU all it could handle in the fourth set. HPU led early at 16-9, but a flurry from the home team made it interesting at 17-14. The Sharks extended the lead to six points but quickly NDNU rebounded and tied the set at 23 all. Another kill by Recca put HPU up and then a hitting error on the Argos ended it.

Recca had a game-high 19 kills to lead four Sharks in double figures. Culpepper (15), Kasey Thompson (13), and Haley Doerfler (11) all had big offensive days. Kara Wong started at libero and did well, picking up 13 digs as Recca dug up 15 balls. Tenika Wentworth also had a double-double with 37 assists and 12 digs.

"I am really happy for Kara Wong who stepped in as the libero and did a really nice job," said Head Coach Daryl Kapis.

Eleven Sharks saw action in the match, senior Christina Furrer said it was a collective effort, "It was a good team effort that will help us with our confidence as we finish up the road trip and prepare for our big home stand."

HPU will play at Holy Names tomorrow before returning to Honolulu for an eight-match home stand beginning on Friday.
