Women’s Basketball Bounces Back with Non-Conference Blowout

Box Score HONOLULU, HI (December 30, 2014) – There was no Christmas Break hangover for the Hawai'i Pacific Women's Basketball Team (9-2) as it got back on the winning track with an 89-68 win over Madonna University (7-5).

Madonna, a NAIA school from Michigan, had absolutely no answer for Morganne Comstock and her Shark teammates. Comstock, who posted a career-high 28 points in the last game, scored 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in 27 minutes of play. Reigning PacWest Freshman of the Week, Breanna Mackenzie, scored 15 points on 6-9 shooting. Chenise Peone had a wonderful all-around game with 13 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

The game was never in doubt. HPU opened the contest with a 6-0 run and led by double-digits just over four minutes into the game. The visitors never got closer than eight points again and HPU led by 18 points twice in the first half including at the end of the half.

The second half was more of the same. With 15:18 left to play, HPU took a 20 point lead; the Sharks held at least a 20 point advantage the rest of the day. The lead swelled to 31 points halfway through the period before HPU finished off the win.

In the first start of her career, Jessi Reeves was solid with nine points and seven rebounds. Kylie Huerta again did it all with seven points, six assists, five rebounds, and three steals. Veanne Navarro and Taylor Blake each added eight points.

Every Shark who was suited up saw action, including four reserve players that played double-figure minutes.

HPU shot the ball well from the floor, connecting on 35-65 shots for 53.8%, which is six percentage points higher than the season average. The defense was not in the holiday spirit, limiting the visitors to 21 of 55 (38.2%) shooting.

HPU is back in action tomorrow in an exhibition contest against UH-Manoa at the Stan Sheriff Center at 1:00 pm.
