Baseball Wins Extra Inning Thriller, Sweeps Sunbirds

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FRESNO, CA (February 24, 2014)—The Hawai`i Pacific Baseball Team (8-1, 3-1) continued its hot start, sweeping Fresno Pacific (6-7, 1-3) on Monday night. The Sea Warriors picked up an 11-10, extra-innings victory in game one and a 2-1 win in the nightcap.

Things looked bad for HPU early with the Sunbirds picking up four runs in the first three innings. The Sea Warriors responded with three runs in the fourth, but FPU scored four more runs in the fourth through sixth innings to take an 8-3 lead. HPU responded with four runs in the eight thanks in large part to a Codey Ellenwood two-RBI double.

Even with the four-run outburst, HPU still trailed by three heading to the ninth inning, setting the stage for a dramatic comeback.

With the top of the lineup batting, leadoff man Jordan Oshiro was drilled by the first pitch of the inning. Tyler Tokunaga singled through the right side in the next at-bat and both later advanced on a wild pitch. The next two Sea Warriors would be retired before Chad Bolibol worked the count full. Down to his last strike, HPU's first baseman crushed a three-run home run to left field to tie the game.

Oshiro later knocked in Ellenwood for what would be the game-winner in the top of the tenth. Pulama Silva came in to work the ninth and tenth innings to earn the victory.
Game two was very close as well, but low scoring.

Derek Nakasato RBI singles in the first and third innings gave HPU a 2-0 advantage which proved to be enough as Doug Christie masterfully pitched a complete game, five-hitter while allowing just one run.

Oshiro was a menace on the base paths all day, scoring three runs after earning four hits and a pair of walks. Nakasato (2), Bolibol (4), Ellenwood (3) and Lanan Rice-Kashima (2) each had multiple RBI days for the Sea Warriors.

The Sea Warriors will now step outside of PacWest play to face Cal State East Bay in Hayward, CA on February 27th.
