Baseball Drops Game One Against Pioneers

Box Score HAYWARD, CA (February 27, 2014)—The Hawai`i Pacific Baseball Team (8-2) stepped out of Pacific West Conference play to face Cal State East Bay (7-6) on Thursday afternoon. A three-run run, ninth inning rally fell short leaving the Sea Warriors with a 6-4 defeat.

HPU fell behind early as the Pioneers managed a pair of runs in the third inning. The Sea Warriors got a run back in the third when Chad Bolibol hit a sacrifice fly scoring Derek Nakasato who tripled to open the inning.

Four more pioneer runs in the bottom of the fifth made the score 6-1. The score would stay that way until the ninth inning.

Codey Ellenwood singled to open the final frame and James Carraway was hit by the next pitch. Keanu Kapana came on for a pinch-hit RBI single. With two outs, Tyler Tokunaga knocked in Carraway and Kapana, but the Sea Warriors couldn't find any late game magic after that, leaving the tying run stranded on first base.

Tokunaga finished the day 3-5 at the plate to go along with the two RBI. Bryson Gauthe continued his solid start to the season for HPU pitching two perfect innings in relief.

The Sea Warriors out hit the Pioneers 12-8 in the game, but suffered from eight runners left on base.

The two teams will face off for a single game tomorrow before closing out with a doubleheader on Saturday.
