Walk-Off Homer Leads to Baseball Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WAIPAHU, HI (March 10, 2014) – Kevin Lenik's walk-off blast in the bottom of the 11th inning propelled the Hawai'i Pacific Baseball Team (10-4, 4-2) to a 6-5 comeback win in game one of the doubleheader against 21st ranked California Baptist (16-4, 2-4). Game two belonged to the Lancers by a 7-2 score.

In the bottom of the 11th, HPU Head Coach Garrett Yukumoto called on Lenik to pinch hit. The junior ended the drama with a high, majestic shot to left field on the 2-2 pitch.

The Sea Warriors did the little things in the seventh inning, scratching out a run without the benefit of a base hit. HPU worked the count and drew three walks to load the bases with just one out. Samuel Goold then hit a deep fly to left field allowing Tyler Tokunaga to tag up and score to tie the game at five.

The first inning was eventful, and worth the wait, after a one hour and 35 minute rain delay to begin the game. The Lancers scored twice to open the contest but HPU responded with four of its own in the bottom half. RBI hits from Derek Nakasato, Keanu Kapana, and Goold all plated runs.

Starter Joshua Garcia pitched six innings while striking out 10 batters; he yielded three runs in the no-decision. Reliever Brent Daugherty kept the Lancers off balance only giving up three hits in five innings of relief. The crafty lefty moved to 2-0 on the season.

The Sea Warriors also got in an early hole in game two, but were unable to mount a comeback. The Lancers jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two and a half innings and were able to subdue the HPU bats.

Jordan Oshiro picked up an RBI in the third and HPU scored another run in the fourth on a wild pitch, but that was it.

Lanan Rice-Kashima had a monster game in the loss, he went 2-3 at the plate with a double and a run scored, and threw out three would-be base stealers.

The two teams will play another doubleheader on Tuesday beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Hans L'Orange Park.
