Baseball Explodes for 29 Runs in Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WAIPAHU, HI (March 14, 2014) – The Sea Warrior bats were on fire during Friday night's doubleheader split against Point Loma, posting 29 runs. The Hawai'i Pacific Baseball Team (12-6, 6-4) lost to PLNU (13-10, 6-4) 9-8 in the first game but then romped in the nightcap, winning 21-4.

There are crooked numbers on a scoreboard, and then there is scoring 13 runs in an inning. HPU left little doubt scoring 13 runs in the first inning to take a 13-2 lead in game two. Even with the big lead, HPU kept working offensively, scoring four more runs in the third inning, three in the fifth and concluding with a single tally in the seventh.

Remarkably, as a team, HPU went 24-47 (.510 batting average) with 22 different Sea Warriors seeing action.
The top of the order was exceptional. Jordan Oshiro went 5-6 with four runs and a RBI in the leadoff spot. Second place hitter Tyler Tokunaga went 4-4 with three runs and two RBI. Kevin Lenik (2), Chad Bolibol (3), Codey Ellenwood (3) and Mitchell Bumann (2) each added multi-hit games.

HPU used six different pitchers in the game; Dorian Rivera got the win after not allowing an earned run in three innings. Nolan Hoppie added two scoreless innings as Dylan Von Wiegandt and Craig Taubman each contributed a scoreless frame.

In game one, as is becoming too common, HPU again fell behind 2-0 after the first inning. Ellenwood brought the game back to even in the second inning with a two RBI double.

Both teams broke out in the fifth inning, both putting five runs on the board. Derek Nakasato, Lenik, Anu Kapana, and Lanan Rice-Kashima all had big RBI hits in the stanza.

In the sixth inning, Lenik roped an RBI double to make it a 9-8 game, but HPU could not tie the game in the late innings.

Bryson Gauthe was outstanding in relief, not allowing a run in four and one-third innings of work.
The two teams will play another double-header on Saturday at Hans L'Orange Park, starting at 2:00 p.m.
