Baseball Walks Off in Game One, Splits

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WAIPAHU, HI (April 12, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Baseball Team (26-14, 16-12) notched its 14th last at-bat victory of the season in game one of Saturday's doubleheader against visiting Azusa Pacific (21-13, 14-8). The Sea Warriors prevailed 6-5 in the opener but lost the second game 7-3.

It was senior Lanan Rice-Kashima's turn to be the hero in game one. With the score knotted at five and runners on first and third base, Rice-Kashima sent a rocket to third base that was partially deflected by the third baseman, but there was no play. Kevin Lenik raced home to score the winning run; Rice-Kashima was then mobbed by his teammates in shallow center field.

Chad Bolibol also had a huge RBI double in the ninth inning to tie the game at five.

The game didn't figure to require late inning dramatics as HPU led 3-2 in the ninth inning with ace Joshua "Rico" Garcia on the mound. However, APU scored three times in the top of the ninth to take a brief lead.

Wyndam Williams continued to impress in a relief role, he earned the win after working two-thirds of a scoreless inning.

Ryan Torres-Torioka continued his torrid hitting of late with three hits and an RBI in the opener. Rice-Kashima, Bolibol, and Samuel Goold also had multi-hit games.

In game two, the Cougars raced out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning. HPU responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the frame without the benefit of a base hit. The Sea Warriors took advantage of two walks, a hit batter, a throwing error, and a wild pitch in the inning.

APU tacked on two more runs in the seventh inning.

HPU scored a run in the ninth on a bases loaded walk to James Carraway to make it 7-3, but the magic ran out with the tying run at the plate.

Tyler Tokunaga led the way with three hits in game two. Derek Nakasato went 2-3 to extend his hitting streak to an HPU record 33 games.

John Albert was effective in relief, shutting out APU in two and a third innings.

The teams will play another doubleheader on Monday at Hans L'Orange Park at 4:00 p.m.
