Baseball Spoils Hilo’s Senior Day With Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HILO, HI (May 4, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Baseball Team (30-18) concluded the regular season with a sweep against Hawaii Hilo (14-33). HPU rolled in the first game 15-2 and shutout the home team 6-0 in the second seven inning game.

In game one, the Sea Warriors came out swinging tallying 20 total hits in the rout. However, it was UH Hilo that took the early lead when it pushed across an unearned run in the first inning.

The Sea Warriors drew even with a run in the third inning after Kevin Lenik singled, stole second, and then scored on an RBI from Chad Bolibol. Bolibol continued his torrid month at the dish with four more hits and three RBI in the opening game.

HPU imposed its will in the fifth inning scoring seven times thanks to five hits and two Hilo errors in the frame. Codey Ellenwood, Jordan Oshiro, Tyler Tokunaga, and Derek Nakasato all picked up RBI in the inning.

The HPU eighth inning was almost a carbon copy of the third. Lenik again singled, stole second, and then scored on a hit by Bolibol, this time a double.

The crooked numbers on the board for HPU continued when the Columbia Blue and Kelly Green struck for six more runs in the ninth inning. Lenik, Bolibol, Samuel Goold, and Lanan Rice-Kashima all drove in runs in the stanza, Rice-Kashima had two RBI on his double down the left field line.

John Albert (2-1) was superb on the hill for HPU; he yielded just one earned run on two hits in seven innings of work. Bryson Gauthe pitched for the final time in his Sea Warrior career and pitched two shutout innings while punching out two, including a called third strike to end the game.

The great pitching continued into the second game, senior Nolan Hoppie got the call to start and closed his career in style. The Orange, CA native gave up three hits in five and one-third innings to earn the win. Wyndam Williams then finished off the game allowing only one hit in an inning and two-thirds.

The offense gave HPU the lead in the third inning when Lenik doubled home Ryan Torres-Torioka and moved Tokunaga to third. Tokunaga then scored on a wild pitch.

In the fourth, the Sea Warriors added four more runs. With the bases juiced, Oshiro walked to force in a run. Tokunaga then singled to score Anu Kapana and Torres-Torioka. In fact, Torres-Torioka almost passed Kapana on the base paths as both raced home. Oshiro then scored himself on a wild pitch.

The Sea Warriors will now cross their collective fingers as the regional playoffs are announced later this week.
