Box Score HONOLULU, HI (August 30, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Men's Soccer Team (1-0) opened the 2014 campaign with a dominating 2-0 non-conference win on the campus of Chaminade University (0-1).
Sophomore
Kona Gaison scored what proved to be the game winner, on a give-and-go from freshman
Mario Garcia from the end line, just 16 minutes into the match. Late in the first half, the match got chippy between the cross-town rivals. It continued into the second half, a combined six yellow cards and 37 fouls were issued in the match; five cards were in a 30 minute time span. It was
Brais Garcia who ended the talking, and essentially the game, with a goal on a pass from
Erik Kemsies amid a heap of bodies at the 72:37 mark.
The Sharks had almost all the legitimate scoring chances in the match, HPU held a 9-1 advantage in shots on goal. Overall, HPU took 18 shots while the 'Swords managed eight. Gaison and
Brais Garcia were active, each with four shots, three on frame.
On a day when numerous new faces shined, freshman goalkeeper
Eduardo Palacios earned a shutout win in his first match. The 6'2 Spaniard looked the part while only needing to make one save. Transfer
Jackson Groves made an immediate impact, controlling the midfield and bringing a physical toughness to the HPU lineup. Newcomer
Ryo Sugihara came as advertised, a smooth operating midfielder who generated offensive opportunities.
"It was a good start to the season. We lost our rhythm a couple of times, but recovered well to control the game. Our defense was outstanding, limiting them to one shot on goal. A lot of players contributed, we are ready for BYUH on Monday," said Head Coach
Chris Fisher.
The Sharks next travel to Laie on Monday to play BYU-Hawaii at 12:30 pm in a non-conference matchup.
