Box Score LAIE, HI (September 1, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Men's Soccer Team (2-0) used a strong second half to earn a 4-1 victory in a non-conference match at BYU-Hawaii (0-1).
The first half was evenly played and hard fought. HPU led in shots 6-3 with one on goal, the Seasiders failed to put a shot on target in the opening half. BYUH led in corner kicks 2-1, but nothing foreshadowed the offensive onslaught that came in the second half.
Chris Campbell broke open the scoring in the 49th minute off a pass from
Mark Thomson. However, just six minutes later the home team scored the equalizing goal. In a 10 minute span, the match went from a nail biter to a complete laugher.
Ryo Sugihara scored in the 70th minute to give HPU a 2-1 lead, a lead that the Sharks did not relinquish. In the 75th minute,
Erik Kemsies set up freshman Chris Galang for his first collegiate goal. Two minutes later,
Brais Garcia nailed a penalty kick to give him two goals in as many matches.
Garcia was a presence all afternoon, racking up six shots, three on goal. Galang took three shots.
The match was physical and had the tone of a rivalry game. A combined seven yellow and three red cards were issued. Campbell received a red card for HPU and must sit out the next game. However, the Sharks will get back the PacWest's Preseason Defender of the Year, and captain,
Olivier Rolland for the next match.
"BYUH has a great team. To come up to the North Shore and get a quality win is special. There were some fantastic goals scored. It is a good send off to Colorado," said HPU Head Coach
Chris Fisher.
HPU next flies to Colorado for a pair of games. First is University of Colorado-Colorado Springs on September 5th and then Metro State on September 7th.
