Box Score LACEY, WA (September 10, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Volleyball Team (2-4) just wanted to get home after a grueling six-game road trip. The Sharks made it easy on themselves with a 3-0 sweep (25-22, 25-16, 25-19) of Saint Martin's (1-5) in just over an hour and a half.
Hitting .500 with double digit kills in college volleyball is special; it doesn't happen every match or even every year. However, anyone watching HPU the last two nights can't help but to assume it is commonplace. A night after
Haley Doerfler hit .500 with 14 kills; Pomi Recca did it with 18 kills to her credit.
The first set was a flashback to the Central Washington tournament where every set was fought for tooth and nail. The first frame saw 19 ties and 11 lead changes. It was the home team that led 21-20 before Kasey Thomson took over. The junior put down three consecutive kills to give HPU a 23-21 lead. After a point by the Saints,
Elizabeth Culpepper and Doerfler ended the set with a kill each.
The HPU win in the opening set fueled the Sharks to roll in the final two sets. Combined, there was one tie and no lead changes in the second and third. In the second set, HPU established a 21-9 lead before SMU went on a run to make the final count somewhat respectable. In the third, HPU kept up the intensity by taking a 10-0 lead and essentially ended the set almost as soon as it started.
It was a total team effort with all 16 HPU players seeing time and 13 playing multiple sets.
Wentworth was busy again, dishing out 40 assists and adding 11 digs.
Amanda Moriarty and
Kara Wong each also had 11 digs, tying them for the team lead.
HPU returns to Hawai'i to play at Hawaii Hilo on September 18th.
