Box Score 2 ELLENSBURG, WA (September 5, 2014) – The Hawai'i Pacific Volleyball Team (1-2) split Friday's doubleheader on day two of the Hampton Inn Wildcat Volleyball Invitational hosted by Central Washington. HPU was narrowly knocked off by #8 Cal State San Bernardino in the first match 3-1 (26-24, 24-26, 18-25, 26-28) but rebounded to beat Cal State Stanislaus 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-16).
After going blow for blow with two national heavyweights, the Sharks attacked unranked Stanislaus to earn the first victory of the season. It was also payback for Stanislaus upsetting HPU early last fall. The match didn't take long, one hour and 13 minutes to be exact. The Sharks hit an unheard of .327 as a team for the match.
HPU was never seriously challenged in the match, trailing just twice all day and that was in the opening part of the third set. All 16 Sharks on the roster made an appearance in the match.
"We played inspired volleyball all the way through against a feisty Stanislaus team. Our energy was fantastic tonight against a team that upset us last season," said HPU Head Coach
Daryl Kapis.
Haley Doerfler and
Christina Furrer each hit .500 on the match with eight and five kills respectively, while controlling the middle.
Pomai Recca led the club in kills with 13 as
Tenika Wentworth again led the team in assists with 29.
Amanda Moriarty racked up a team-high 23 digs while
Kasey Thompson had 13 digs to go with six kills and a .429 hitting percentage.
Earlier in the day HPU again came close to knocking off a highly ranked team. HPU lost the second and fourth sets by a combined four points.
The Sharks won the first set thanks to two big runs at the beginning and the end of the set. After losing the first point of the set, HPU scored the next five to take an early lead. CSUSB led 24-20 and hope seemed to be lost until HPU scored six unanswered to win 26-24.
The second set was also full of runs. The Coyotes took a 10-1 lead to start, HPU counted with a 9-1 run immediately following. The Sharks ended up with a 23-19 lead, but couldn't close it out. The third set was all CSUSB.
The Sharks again had a chance to win another set in the fourth after holding 25-24 and 26-25 leads. However, CSUSB made the big plays to win the match.
Wentworth posted 38 assists and 11 digs, Recca joined her in the double-double club with 18 kills and 12 digs. Doerfler,
Elizabeth Culpepper, and Thomson were also big contributors on offense with 31 combined kills. Moriarty again held down the defense with 18 digs,
Kara Wong also had a solid game in the back row with 10 digs of her own.
The Sharks close out the tournament tomorrow with another tough matchup, this time #16 Sonoma State at 2:30 p.m. PST.
