Box Score HONOLULU (October 29, 2015)—The Hawaii Pacific women's volleyball team fell to cross-island rival BYU-Hawaii 27-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-23 in a crucial PacWest Conference matchup at Saint Andrew's Priory.
The Sharks (12-9, 7-6 PacWest) were led by senior outside hitter
Elizabeth Culpepper (19 kills and 13 digs) and Kamehameha product
Pomai Recca (13 kills and 10 digs). Setter
Tenika Wentworth notched 41 assists and chipped in nine digs and three kills, while senior defensive specialist
Amanda Moriarty racked up 23 digs. Sophomore middle blocker
Lea Felton also turned in a noteworthy performance with nine kills via a .350 hitting percentage.
Culpepper led the home squad in the first frame with six kills, but the team hit a collective .178 as BYU-Hawaii built and held onto its advantage. HPU would bounce back, though, and took the second set to essentially turn the contest into a best-of-three affair.
"We gave a good effort tonight, but it was the little things that cost us in the three sets we lost by two points," said HPU coach
Daryl Kapis. "We just need to have a little more attention to detail when we are playing a team as good as BYU-Hawaii."
The Seasiders (11-10, 9-4) received 19 kills from Kathleen Collette Kalougata, while teammate Sinamoni Tonga added 14 kills.
HPU hits the road for a three-match away swing and returns to action with a home contest against St. Andrew's Priory on Friday, Nov. 13, to face PacWest foe Point Loma at 7 p.m.
"Lea Felton gave us a good spark off the bench tonight in the middle," Kapis said. "We look forward to getting back at it and hitting the road on Tuesday and head to Fresno."
