Pomai Recca racked up a match-high 24 kills to help propel the Hawaii Pacific women's volleyball team past Azusa Pacific University 30-28, 26-24, 25-27, 20-25, 15-6 in a thrilling PacWest Conference matchup at the Cougars' gym.
The Sharks (11-4, 6-1 PacWest) currently own the league's top record and have won nine of their last 10 matches, while also improving to 3-1 on the road in 2015. Recca, a junior from Kamehameha who also had 14 digs, was aided on offense by
Elizabeth Culpepper (13 kills),
Jacqueline Wolfe (12 kills)
Carson Pyle and
Kayla Demari (10 kills apiece). Setter
Tenika Wentworth notched 61 assists and nine digs, while senior defensive specialist
Amanda Moriarty turned in another memorable performance with 21 digs.
In the first game, Recca set the tone with six kills on an impressive .545 hitting percentage, while Wolfe added four kills via a blistering .667 swinging. Recca also added three service aces throughout the match, while Wolfe, Wentworth and Pyle posted six, five and four blocks to supplement the Sharks' defensive effort.
"We played tough in a crazy first two games, but slightly lost focus in games three and four," said HPU skipper
Daryl Kapis. "We need to get better at staying sharp all the way through, but the girls really dialed in for game five.

The Cougars (7-7, 3-3) were led by Mattie Shelford's 21 kills and Ashley Midland's five blocks.
HPU continues its road swing that includes a four-match PacWest trip through California and Utah. The Sharks return home on Oct. 16 to face Notre Dame De Namur University.
