Holt Strong Again in Baseball’s Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WAIPAHU, HI (March 15, 2015) – The Hawai'i Pacific Baseball Team (12-5, 9-3) earned a split on the second day of doubleheaders that made up the season series with Dixie State (12-8, 7-1). The Red Storm remained red hot in the first game, winning 9-4 but HPU bounced back in game two, 8-2.

In game one, the Red Storm took a three-run lead in the third inning. In the bottom of the third, HPU struck back when Bronson Aiwohi doubled home Tre Haliburton-Goeas. The Sharks got even closer (3-2) when Chad Bolibol drove in Tyler Tokunaga in the sixth.

In the seventh, Dixie State scored again, to make it a two-run game. Jordan Oshiro singled home Austin Inabata in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 4-3 contest.

The Red Storm wasn't done, scoring one more in the eighth inning and another four in the ninth to make it a 9-3 ballgame.

Nolan Barraza drove home Aiwohi on a sacrifice fly, but HPU was then stopped in the ninth.

Despite throwing well over six and one-third innings, Brandon Van Stone (1-1) got pinned with the loss after allowing four runs, two earned.

Game two was a perfect combination of offense and dominant pitching to get the Sharks their first win of the series.

Dixie State again scored first in the second inning, but Harley Holt would be untouchable for the next several innings.

After the Red Storm scratched for one in the second, HPU struck back for one when Aiwohi walked with the bases loaded to drive in a run.

In the bottom of the third, the Sharks attacked to put together a massive seven-run inning. James Carraway started off the barrage of run scoring when he tripled home two. Next both Haliburton-Goeas and Oshiro singled to drive in one run each. Tokunaga then reached on a fielding error by the Red Storm to allow two more runs to score. Finally, the Sharks ended their rally after Chad Bolibol drove in Tokunaga on a single of his own, making it 8-1.

Dixie State put up one more run in the fourth, but after that it was smooth sailing for HPU's starter. Holt ended his day throwing a complete game (seven innings) allowing two runs on five hits with two strikeouts on only 90 pitches.

Carraway had a good day, going 2-4 with two RBI in the doubleheader, along with Aiwohi who went 3-7 with two RBI as well.

This marks the end of the Sharks' long opening home stand. HPU starts its 14-game road trip, beginning with California Baptist, on March 21st in Riverside.
