Women’s Tennis Opens PacWest Tournament with Sweep

SURPRISE, AZ (April 16, 2015) – The Hawai'i Pacific Women's Tennis Team (19-5) started off the Pacific West Conference Tournament with a 5-0 win against #25 Point Loma (9-13). HPU now advances to the league semi-final tomorrow.

HPU opened the match by taking all three doubles matches. Lea Kruse-Utermann and Lorena Gheorghe blasted the competition 8-1 to get HPU on the board. Then the doubles teams of Vivian Hansen/Sofia Tavitian and Kristyna Hancarova/Nicole Hoynaski (#11) both won by 8-4 counts that gave the Sharks some breathing room.

The race was on in singles to see who would finish their matches first. Gheorghe stayed on fire in singles and won decisively (6-1, 6-1) at fourth singles. Kruse-Utermann then sent HPU into the next round with a 6-2, 6-1 win at fifth singles. With HPU up 5-0, the match was called.

The Sharks next face #11 Academy of Art tomorrow in Surprise, AZ.
