Baseball Takes 10-12 from Hilo after Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HILO, HI (April 19, 2015) – Hawai'i Pacific Baseball Team (22-19) took the final two road games of the season and series against UH Hilo (8-35). The Sharks won the season series 10-2, winning five of six both at home and on the road. On Sunday, HPU rolled 24-4 in game one and then won game two 3-2 in extra innings.

Game one proved to be a slugfest for HPU as the offense came out swinging after falling behind in the first inning by one.

The Sharks scored eight runs in the second inning and another eight runs over the next four innings, putting the score at 16-1 by the end of the sixth.

Hilo scored three runs in the seventh, but HPU scored another six in the top of the eighth inning. The Sharks followed up with another two runs in the ninth before slamming the door to make it a final of 24-4.

Tyler Tokunaga led the offense with four RBI, going 3-5 at the plate.

Nolan Barraza, Ryan Torres-Torioka, and Austin Inabata each had three RBI, while every Shark starter recorded a base hit.

Starter Nick Camarena (3-3) put together a solid outing, going five innings, allowing one run on six hits while striking out two.

Game two, however, was the epitome of a pitcher's duel.

Hilo took the early 1-0 lead in the second inning and managed to hold it until the seventh.

In the seventh, HPU scored two runs, one on a James Carraway bunt single to tie the game. Later in inning, Steven Camberos hit a sacrifice fly to score Carraway. However, UHH scored on a groundout to tie the game in its last at-bat.

The finale of the series would need extra frames to decide a winner. After 103 consecutive innings against each other, there was three more.

In the tenth, Torres-Torioka singled to center field to drive in Reid Akau. After holding off the Vulcans in the bottom half, the Sharks won 3-2.

Jordan Deponte (4-1) earned the win after pitching nine innings with seven strikeouts, allowing two runs on six hits. Cody Ells picked up his second save in as many days after pitching the tenth inning.

HPU takes on Academy of Art on April 25th with game one starting at 2:00 pm at Hans L'Orange Park.
