FAIRMONT, WV (April 24, 2015) – The Hawai'i Pacific Acrobatics and Tumbling Team (6-1) won its sixth consecutive meet with a 274.300-269.155 win over host Fairmont State (4-6). The Sharks will now play Oregon in the national semifinal tomorrow.
Despite the fact that Fairmont State posted a 10 in the Compulsory Event, HPU won 38.45 to 38.10. The Sharks looked good in the Pyramid Heat with a 9.9. HPU made its move in the Tumbling Heat scoring a 9.2 while the home team managed only an 8.6.
HPU extended its lead in the Acro Event by .95 points. The first two heats were particularly strong, both putting up 9.85s.
A day after winning an event final in the Pyramid Event (Heat Two), HPU was consistent with three consecutive 9.85s. Fairmont didn't keep pace and dropped another .65 points back.
The Sharks were another .65 points better in the Toss Event with wins in the first two heats, including a 9.65 in the opener.
Although HPU had won each of the first four events, the lead was only 2.1 points with the two most heavily weighted events remaining.
The gang from Honolulu put away the meet in the Tumbling Event with a 56-52.825 triumph. Superior efforts in the Aerial (9.6) and Six Element (9.85) Passes lifted the Sharks.
In the Team Event the Falcons narrowly edged the Sharks 92.68-92.55 but the slim margin wasn't enough to erase HPU's lead.
HPU now faces Oregon in the semifinals at 12:30 EST tomorrow in Fairmont, WV.
