Box Score SEATTLE (September 10, 2015)—Despite putting together a valiant comeback attempt, the Hawaii Pacific women's volleyball team dropped a heartbreaker to Simon Fraser (B.C) for the second time in five days.
The Clan (3-2) claimed the thrilling five-set affair 39-37, 25-16, 21-25, 32-34, 15-11 at Seattle Pacific University's Brougham Pavilion in the opening round of the three-day Great Northwest Athletic Conference-PacWest Crossover Tournament.
The Sharks (2-3) received a match-high 26 kills from junior outside hitter
Pomai Recca, a junior out of Kamehameha, while senior outside hitter
Elizabeth Culpepper added 20 kills and 22 digs. Sophomore setter
Tenika Wentworth racked up a match-leading 55 assists and also accumulated 20 digs in the marathon affair.
"This was the longest match that I and the girls have ever been a part of," said HPU coach
Daryl Kapis of the contest, which according to officials on site lasted two hours and 45 minutes. "It was disappointing that we had a 24-19 lead in game one and lost. Games three and four, we played extremely hard. It was nice to see Elizabeth and Pomai really take over on the outside during the match."
Simon Fraser received 18 kills from Devon May and took advantage of 15 HPU service errors, including Culpepper's errant serve that ended the match.
HPU will play two matches on Friday as part of the Crossover tourney against Alaska Fairbanks (8:15 Hawaii time) and Montana State Billings (3 p.m. Hawaii time).
