Box Score HONOLULU (September 5, 2015)—For the second consecutive match, senior outside hitter
Elizabeth Culpepper overpowered the competition to the tune of a Sharks sweep.
The San Luis Obispo, Calif. native led HPU with 8 kills, 7 digs and 2 solo blocks—all match highs—as its women's volleyball team swept Saint Martin's (Wash.), 25-18, 25-20, 25-17, on the third and final day of the Hawaii Invitational at St. Andrew's Priory's James C. Castle Gym.
The Sharks (2-1) also received 7 kills from former Kamehameha standout
Pomai Recca, who also accounted for four of HPU's 11 aces; teammate
Amanda Moriarty led the way with five aces. Freshman setter
Mahea Pescaia, a 5-foot-7 product of Kamehameha, paced the Sharks with a match-high 26 assists.
A pair of freshmen middle hitters also buoyed HPU's effort as
Carson Pyle and
Jacqueline Wolfe added six and five kills.
The Saints (0-3) received 8 kills from Kyra Davidson, but the visitors were held to a .062 hitting percentage.
"We had to fight throughout the whole match; the entire match was a battle regardless of the score," said HPU coach
Daryl Kapis. "Every point was hard-earned. I'm really happy for Mahea for leading us, knowing that we're down two setters and still leading us to victory. She did an incredible job as a freshman setter.
"While our pin hitters weren't fantastic, our two freshmen middle hitters really stepped up when we needed them."
HPU returns to St. Andrew's Priory Saturday at 7 p.m. to face Simon Fraser (B.C.) University.
