Baseball Silences Saint Leo, Completes Five-Game Sweep

Box Score WAIPAHU, Hawaii (February 14, 2016) Christian Kapeliela doubled, homered and drove in four runs, while Tyler Tokunaga tripled and drove in three to help the Hawaii Pacific baseball team claim the series finale over Saint Leo (Fla.) University 10-2 and sweep the five-game set at Hans L'Orange Park.

The Sharks (5-0) racked up 11 hits on the afternoon and all but two position players had at least one knock tallied on the stat sheet. Extra-base hits were popular for HPU, which also received a double from Bronson Aiwohi and triples from Nolan Barraza and Austin Inabata. Catcher Steven Camberos drove in two runs for the hot-hitting home team.

A day after his brother Brandon picked up a victory, freshman hurler Tyler Van Stone notched the win after allowing two runs on six hits and striking out two over six solid innings. Sharks relievers Casey Duenas and Sean Collins combined to shut out the visitors over the final three innings and ensure HPU's 5-0 mark, the team's best start since going 6-0 to begin the 2014 campaign.

Lions starter Michael Dunnigan (0-1) was shelled by HPU to the tune of eight runs on nine hits over four innings. The Sharks scored at least one run in the second through seventh innings.

The Lions (3-5) were led by shortstop Bryan Nunez, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI.

The Sharks are aiming to improve on their 27-20 record last year, which included a 17-15 mark in conference play. HPU was picked to finish seventh in a very competitive 10-team PacWest Conference via a preseason vote by league coaches.

Under the guidance of 11th-year skipper Garett Yukumoto, who is the program's winningest coach with a 294-196-1 mark, the Sharks are following the pace set by 13 seniors on the roster, including ace pitcher Rico Garcia.

HPU returns to Hans L'Orange Park on Friday, Feb. 19 to begin a five-game set with the newly-renamed Felician University. The squads will play doubleheaders on Saturday (2/5:30 p.m.) and Sunday (noon/3:30 p.m.) following Friday night's single contest.
