Box Score 2 WAIPAHU, Hawaii (March 11, 2016) – The Hawaii Pacific baseball team claimed both games of a double dip with visiting Azusa Pacific University, winning the opener 8-4 and taking the return matchup 7-4, to begin a four-game PacWest Conference series at Hans L'Orange Park on a positive note.
HPU catcher and designated hitter
Steven Camberos and right fielder Tre Haliburton-Goeas drove in 4 runs apiece over both games, while teammate
Bronson Aiwohi collected 4 hits on the evening.
The Sharks (15-5, 6-3 PacWest) racked up 12 hits in the first game as
Tanner Tokunaga went 3-for-5 with 2 runs scored and 2 stolen bases.
HPU pitcher
Kyle Detwiler (3-0), usually a reliever, made the start in the first game and notched the victory after tossing 6 effective innings through which he scattered 6 hits and surrendered 3 earned runs. Cody Els held the Cougars scoreless over the final 3 innings to notch his first save of the season.
Sharks hurler
Tyler Van Stone (2-1) got the win in the return matchup as the freshman allowed 3 earned runs over 6 innings before being relieved by
Ethan Kalin, who notched two scoreless frames.
Closer
Brandon Bonilla came on to finish the ninth inning of Game 2 and notched his sixth save of the season; he is currently tied for the national lead in that category. The hard-throwing lefty has yet to allow a run through 8 1/3 innings this season, during which he has amassed 14 strikeouts.
Halliburton-Goeas went 2-for-5 in the nightcap and collected his fifth double of the season in the process.
The Cougars (7-12, 3-3) were led at the dish by third baseman Adrian Tovalin, who homered in both games – his fifth and sixth bombs of the season.
APU starters Jonny Reid (1-2) and Joel Belk (0-2) took the losses after combining to allow 13 runs on 16 hits to the potent Sharks offense.
Bonilla, the son of former Major League slugger Bobby Bonilla, joined the Sharks after spending time at both Arizona State and Grand Canyon Universities. The hard-throwing relief option, who can let it fly at 97 mph, also boasts a biting slider that darts in toward right-handed hitters.
Bonilla was selected in the 37
th round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft in 2011 after his time at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., by the Colorado Rockies. He was then picked in 2014 via the 25
th round of the MLB June Amateur Draft by the Baltimore Orioles, but chose instead to focus on earning his college degree; he's currently a graduate student at HPU.
The Sharks are aiming to improve on their 27-20 record from last year, which included a 17-15 mark in conference play. HPU was picked to finish seventh in a very competitive 10-team PacWest Conference via a preseason vote by league coaches. The team is guided by 11
th-year skipper
Garett Yukumoto, who is the program's winningest coach at 304-201-1.
HPU returns to Hans L'Orange Park on Saturday, March 12 (2/5:30 p.m.) for a doubleheader to begin a crucial four-game series with Azusa Pacific.
