Baseball Splits Doubleheader with No. 10 California Baptist

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WAIPAHU, Hawaii (March 23, 2016) – The Hawaii Pacific baseball team ended 10th-ranked and West Region-leading California Baptist's 10-game winning streak and split a doubleheader, winning the opener 4-3 (10 innings) and dropping the return matchup 5-4 (7 innings), to continue a four-game PacWest Conference series at Hans L'Orange Park.

The Sharks (16-9, 8-7 PacWest) won the opener in walk-off fashion as catcher William Leskovec dropped a single just inside the right-field line to score Nolan Barraza – who went 4-for-5 in the game – in the home half of the 10th frame to break the stalemate. HPU pushed the contest to extra innings when freshman outfielder Keola Himan crushed a solo homer over the fence in left to even the score at 3 in the seventh inning. Tanner Marty notched a two-run double in the second inning that gave the Sharks an initial 2-0 advantage.

Brandon Bonilla (1-0), the team's senior closer, held the Lancers scoreless over the final 1 2/3 innings and stranded runners on second and third in the 10th inning to set up the walk-off opportunity. The hard-throwing lefty notched the win and has yet to allow a run in 10 innings this season, through which he has struck out 15.

Himan's homer prevented CBU starter Dylan Stowell from earning what would have been his seventh win of the season as the crafty pitcher drew attention from multiple scouts on hand. Justin Montgomery (1-1) took the loss after allowing the winning run and surrendering three hits in an inning on the hill.

The Lancers (23-6, 13-2) claimed the second game behind Jeremy McDonald (4-0), who compiled 8 strikeouts over six innings and gave up two runs on a lone hit. Brody Robinson came on to get the final two outs and picked up his first save.

HPU starter Ethan Kalin (2-1) took the loss after allowing 5 runs (1 earned) and walking six CBU hitters.

Bonilla, the son of former Major League slugger Bobby Bonilla, joined the Sharks after spending time at both Arizona State and Grand Canyon Universities. The hard-throwing relief option, who can let it fly at 97 mph, also boasts a biting slider that darts in toward right-handed hitters.

Bonilla was selected in the 37th round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft in 2011 after his time at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., by the Colorado Rockies. He was then picked in 2014 via the 25th round of the MLB June Amateur Draft by the Baltimore Orioles, but chose instead to focus on earning his college degree; he's currently a graduate student at HPU.

The Sharks are aiming to improve on their 27-20 record from last year, which included a 17-15 mark in conference play. HPU was picked to finish seventh this season in a very competitive 10-team PacWest Conference via a preseason vote by league coaches. The team is guided by 11th-year skipper Garett Yukumoto, who is the program's winningest coach at 305-205-1.

HPU returns to Hans L'Orange Park on Thursday, March 24 (6 p.m.) to conclude the crucial matchup with California Baptist.
