Box Score 2 ALAMEDA, Calif. (April 2, 2016) – The Hawaii Pacific baseball team split a road doubleheader with Holy Names University, winning the opener 10-3 and dropping the return matchup 3-2 (seven innings), to conclude a four-game PacWest Conference series at College of Alameda.
The Sharks (22-12, 14-10 PacWest), who went 5-3 on the Northern California trip, received three hits and two RBI apiece from shortstop
Tyler Tokunaga and
Austin Inabata in the opener.
Tanner Tokunaga also drove in two runs, while
Nolan Barraza and
Bronson Aiwohi collected two base knocks each.
HPU senior hurler
Rico Garcia (4-3) picked up the Game 1 win after allowing two runs on four hits and striking out five through seven innings.
Brandon Bonilla, the team's senior closer, came in for a non-save assignment in the fifth inning of the second game with two runners on and no out. The hard-throwing lefty notched two scoreless innings and has allowed just one unearned run in 16 innings this season, through which he has struck out 23. Starter
Brandon Van Stone (4-2) took the loss after giving up three runs in four innings and striking out three.
The Hawks (6-27, 4-16) gave up four unearned runs in the opener and starter Jared Carr (2-4) took the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings. Holy Names claimed the second game thanks in part to hurler Jayse Bannister (2-5), who struck out four and scattered six hits in the complete-game effort.
HPU catcher
William Leskovec doubled in two runs in the sixth inning, but the Sharks stranded the potential tying run on third to end the finale.
Garcia, a prep standout at Saint Louis School, was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America Preseason All-West Region First Team and earned a spot on the Preseason All-PacWest Team. He led the Sharks with a 6-4 record last season and a 2.18 ERA through 10 starts, including four complete games. The Kapolei native also paced HPU in 2015 with a school-record 87 strikeouts over 74 1/3 innings pitched, while opposing batters hit just .186 against him.
Garcia was named to the All-PacWest First Team in 2015 and was also honored as HPU's Male Athlete of the Year. Earlier this season, he set the program record for career innings pitched and continues to build on that mark.
Bonilla, the son of former Major League slugger Bobby Bonilla, joined the Sharks after spending time at both Arizona State and Grand Canyon Universities. The hard-throwing relief option, who can let it fly at 97 mph, also boasts a biting slider that darts in toward right-handed hitters.
Bonilla was selected in the 37
th round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft in 2011 after his time at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., by the Colorado Rockies. He was then picked in 2014 via the 25
th round of the MLB June Amateur Draft by the Baltimore Orioles, but chose instead to focus on earning his college degree; he's currently a graduate student at HPU.
The Sharks are aiming to improve on their 27-20 record from last year, which included a 17-15 mark in conference play. HPU was picked to finish seventh this season in a very competitive 10-team PacWest Conference via a preseason vote by league coaches. The team is guided by 11
th-year skipper
Garett Yukumoto, who is the program's winningest coach at 311-208-1.
HPU returns to Hans L'Orange Park to finish its home slate with a four-game series against UH Hilo on Saturday and Sunday, April 9 and 10 (doubleheaders at 2/5:30 p.m. and 11 a.m./2:30 p.m.).
