Box Score 2 HILO, Hawaii (May 1, 2016) – The Hawaii Pacific baseball team concluded its season by splitting a road doubleheader with UH Hilo, claiming the opener 4-0 and dropping the return matchup 3-1 (7 inn.), to wrap up a four-game series at Wong Stadium.
The Sharks (30-20, 19-17 PacWest) leaned on senior hurler
Brandon Van Stone (5-2), who turned in a stellar performance in the opener to wrap up his Sharks career and spun a shutout while limiting Hilo to just one hit.
Tyler Tokunaga and
Tanner Marty both doubled and collected two hits apiece to pace HPU at the dish in Game 1.
Nolan Barraza notched two hits for HPU in the finale, while senior catcher
Steven Camberos doubled and drove in his team's lone run.
The Vulcans (9-33, 7-27) were led by pitcher Jordan Kumasaka (2-3), who allowed a run on six hits and struck out three through 6 1/3 innings of Game 2. HPU hurler
Matthew Gunter (2-3) was saddled with the loss after allowing all three runs across the fourth and fifth innings.
The Sharks improved upon on their 27-20 record from last year, which included a 17-15 mark in conference play. HPU was picked to finish seventh this season in a very competitive 10-team PacWest Conference via a preseason vote by league coaches, and is likely to finish within the league's top five slots when the standings are final.
