EUGENE, Ore. — No. 4 Hawai'i Pacific University kept it close through four of the six events against No. 2 Oregon, but the Ducks pulled away to beat the Sharks 284.98 to 273.18 on Wednesday night at Matthew Knight Arena.
The Sharks (1-1) suffered their first loss of the season, while the Ducks (1-0) won their season opener.
HPU battled with the Ducks throughout the early portions of the meet. Oregon took the opening Compulsory 38.60-38.00, but the Sharks followed by winning the Acro 28.90-28.50 and the Pyramid 29.35-29.15 to end the first half of the meet tied at 96.25.
Oregon edged HPU in the fourth event, the Toss, 28.65-28.55, but the Ducks outdistanced the Sharks in the Tumbling event 58.225-54.225.
The final event, the choreographed Team Routine, the Sharks scored a 94.15. The Ducks wrapped up the night with high-reward performance and nailed it, scoring a 101.85 and win the competition 284.98-273.18.
HPU returns to Oahu for its next meet, when the Sharks host No. 5 Azusa Pacific, for the schools second meeting in less than two weeks. The Sharks and Cougars clash next Friday, Feb. 24, in a 7 p.m. meet at McKinley High School.
