HONOLULU – The Hawai'i Pacific University Men's Basketball team will honor a former teammate by hosting the eighth annual Kam's Helmets Day on Monday as part of the Sharks basketball game against Chaminade at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center.
Free skateboard, bicycle and moped helmets will be distributed while supplies last at halftime of the men's game in memory of former HPU basketball student-athlete Kameron Steinhoff, who died from a head injury suffered in a tragic skateboarding accident.
Tipoff against the Silverswords is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., following the HPU women's game that begins at 4:30 p.m. at the Blaisdell.
Following Steinhoff's fatal accident almost eight years ago, HPU established Kam's Helmets to provide helmets and increase public safety. To date, HPU has given away more than 1,200 helmets to children, adults, and HPU students. Helmets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Steinhoff, a 2008 Punahou graduate and former Hawai'i State Player of the Year, competed in 51 games for HPU and had recently completed his third year of eligibility when he passed away on May 18, 2011. He played for HPU head coach
Darren Vorderbruegge.
"Kam was a dynamic young man and we miss him very much," Vorderbruegge said. "His family and our basketball program are committed to keeping his memory alive by assisting young people here on the Island."
A special edition t-shirt will be for sale at the games with proceeds going to the Kam's Helmets fund. Donations are also being accepted to help fund this special project.
