HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University women's basketball head coach
Reid Takatsuka has been selected the a national coach of the week by the website WHoopDirt.com.
The site awarded Takatsuka the WHoopDirt.com Coach of the Week presented by Pivot Analysis for NCAA Division II, joining Kim Mulkey of Baylor (NCAA Division I), Jon Herbrechtsmeyer of Bethel (Minn.) (NCAA III), Sue Syljebeck of Siena Heights (Mich.) (NAIA) and Brian Ortmeier of Laramie CC (Wyo.) (Junior Colleges) with the weekly award.
Takatsuka guided HPU to three more wins this week, extending their winning streak to 10. On Monday (Jan. 6), the Sharks, ranked No. 14 in the WBCA Coaches' Poll at the time, held off a late run to defeat Point Loma 69-64. After improving to No. 11 in the latest poll, HPU led wire to wire in a 68-59 victory over Notre Dame de Namur on Thursday night. The Sharks closed out the week with a record-setting 115-83 triumph over Dominican (Calif.) on Saturday. Among the five program records broken were most points in a game as well as most points in a quarter (45 in the 2nd quarter). The Sharks are 9-0 in PacWest Conference play and lead the league by two games.
With the weekly honor, Takatsuka is now eligible for the WHoopDirt.com National Coach of the Year Award presented by Pivot Analysis which will be announced at the conclusion of the 2019-20 college basketball season.
The Sharks conclude their six-game homestand on Thursday. Cross-town rival Chaminade in a PacWest Hawai'i Challenge contest that is scheduled to tipoff at 4:30 p.m. at The Shark Tank.
