AZUSA, Calif. — No. 6 Hawai'i Pacific University took it on the chin Tuesday night as No. 2 Azusa Pacific picked up a 276.965-to-264.280 Acrobatics & Tumbling victory at the Felix Event Center.
The Sharks (0-2) fell behind in the compulsories and could never dig out of the early hole to the Cougars (2-0).
The Sharks suffered with a 7.70 out of 10.00 in the Acro heat of the Compulsories fell behind by nearly two points before the second heat of the event. The Sharks saw the Cougars put up a 37.40 in the first event to their own 34.95.
In the Acro event, HPU posted a 27.95 only to have the Cougars post a 29.30.
The Sharks won their only event of the match in the Pyramid. HPU posted a 9.65 in the Inversion heat, a 9.60 in the Synchronized heat and a 9.70 in the Open heat for a 28.95 for the event. The Cougars tallied a 28.85.
APU held a 95.55-to-91.85 lead at halftime.
The Sharks recorded a 27.00 in the Toss event, while the Cougars chalked up a 28.70 to take a commanding lead.
In the Tumbling event, HPU kept the event close until the final pass, the Open pass, where APU recorded a 9.950 to the Sharks 8.050. The Cougars took the even 56.88 to 53.15.
The final event, the Team event saw APU tally a 95.84, with HPU collecting a 92.28, giving the Cougars the win 276.965-to-264.280.
The Sharks return home and host their first meet in The Shark Tank on Friday, March 6 when they welcome No. 5 Gannon to Honolulu. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
