EUGENE, Ore. — No. 6 Hawai'i Pacific University fell behind early and couldn't catch up to No. 2 Oregon on Saturday as Oregon claimed a 280.680-266.720 win over HPU in the 2020 season opener at Matthew Knight Arena.
The Sharks (0-1) posted solid performances for a season opening meet, while the Ducks (1-0) are looking to return to the top spot that has eluded them in the last few seasons.
The Sharks opened the meet with a 37.65 in the Compulsory event, including a 9.90 in the Toss heat. However a 9.05 in the Acro heat was a killer. The Ducks recorded a 39.05 with a perfect 10.00 in the Toss heat and a 9.95 in the Pyramid and never trailed again.
HPU notched a 28.85 in the Acro Event, with Oregon posting a 29.35.
The Sharks slipped a bit more in the Pyramid to the No. 2 team nationally. HPU recorded a 28.70 with a 9.65 in the Open heat. The Ducks tallied a 29.65 and posted a perfect 10.00 in the Open heat. Oregon held a 98.05-95.20 lead at halftime.
The Toss event was taken by the Ducks 29.15-27.80, with HPU winning the Open heat 9.55-to-9.35.
HPU suffered in the Quad Pass in the Tumbling Event that allowed Oregon to claim a 56.650-to-51.000 advantage in the event. The Sharks Aerial Pass got their best result with a 9.900, but the Ducks got a perfect 10.00 on their Open pass and a 9.900 on the 6-Element Pass to take a solid lead.
The Sharks wrapped up the meet scoring a 92.72 out of 103.89 in the team event, falling just behind Oregon's 96.83 of 107.13 in the team.
HPU is back on the mat on the road at No. 4 Azusa Pacific on Tuesday, Feb. 18. The meet at the Felix Event Center is set for 5 p.m. HST (7 p.m. PST).
