Volleyball Sharks Welcome Six Newcomers

HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University coach Jenic Tumaneng welcomes six newcomers who have signed to play for the volleyball Sharks in the upcoming year.
 
The incoming class features transfer outside hitter Rohyn Huss, a junior from Anchorage, Alaska/Dimond via Los Angeles Harbor CC and her sister incoming freshman Gillian Huss of Anchorage, Alaska/West Anchorage. The other four incoming players are sophomore transfer setter Emily Johnson of Washougal, Wash. and Eastern Washington, along with a trio of incoming freshmen middle Sunny Brown of Draper, Utah/Alta, outside hitter Ella Dotson of Tucson, Ariz./Marana, and defensive specialist Makayla Warthan of Modesto, Calif./Byer.
 
"We are excited to have an opportunity to work these young ladies in our recruiting class," said Tumaneng. "These new Sharks are bright student-athletes that have unique talents, athleticism and competitiveness to keep our program at a consistent high level of competition and bring out the best of our team."
 
The Sharks are coming off their best season in 14 years, posting a 19-11 overall mark in 2019, placing fourth in the PacWest with a 15-7 record.
 
Rohyn Huss comes to HPU after earning All-Region and first team All-South Coast Conference for LA Harbor in 2019. She tallied 476 kills, and was second in the California Community College Athletic Association with 5.06 kills per set. She was also a three-time All-State performer in both volleyball and basketball at Dimond High in Anchorage.
 
Gillian Huss was the team MVP at West Anchorage, where she served as varsity captain in volleyball and basketball. She played in the Alaska All-Star volleyball match and was also a second team all-conference selection in basketball.
 
"We are thrilled to have these sisters join our program," said Tumaneng. "Rohyn is a skilled athlete who can make an immediate impact with her experience at a high junior college level, and Gillian has the athletic ability to compete at multiple positions and add depth in the front row."
 
Johnson comes to HPU after a season at Eastern Washington where she appeared in 12 matches as a freshman. The sophomore transfer earned Washington Class 2A All-State honors and was thrice named All-Greater St. Helens League. She finished in the top five percent of her graduating class, receiving both her high school diploma and an associate's degree from Clark CC in the school's Running Start Program. She also earned All-League honors on the tennis court, where she lettered four years as well.
 
"We are glad to have Emily join our ohana," Tumaneng stated. "We look forward to her competing with our experienced setters and bring her talented skills and volleyball IQ to the program."
 Brown comes to HPU after earning All-State and All-Region at Alta. She served as a varsity captain for three seasons and was selected to the honor roll and high honor roll in her high school junior and senior years.
 
"Sunny brings the physicality and athleticism we are looking for in our program," said the HPU coach. "With her gifted talent, the coaching staff is ecstatic to get Sunny started as a student-athlete at HPU."
 
Dotson mixed outstanding athletic and academic abilities at Marana High. She was a two-time All-Region outside hitter and finished with a 4.0 grade point average. She completed her time Marana with 603 career kills and led the region as a senior with a .334 hitting percentage.
 
"We are thrilled to have Ella join our HPU Volleyball family," said Tumaneng. "She will compete well with our outside position. She is an amazing person, a leader in the classroom and a passionate competitor on the court."
 

Warthan was the team MVP and helped Byer High to a league championship. She gained Academic All-League honors and appeared with her club team, Rage Volleyball, in two national championships.
 
"Makayla showed perseverance and determination during the recruiting process," said Sharks mentor said. "Her character, skills and competitive drive to make an impact, will allow her to fit right in to our program."
