HONOLULU – Hawai'i Pacific University is ranked third in the Division II Sports Information Directors' Women's Basketball Poll released on Tuesday.
The 3-0 Sharks are also No. 1 in the West Region in the first set of polls released that removed any teams that have opted out of the season because of the pandemic.
The Women's Basketball Coaches Association, who issues the other major national poll, has yet to release any poll for the 2020-21 season.
Drury (Mo.) (8-0) is the unanimous top ranked team in the D2SIDA poll, picking up all 16 first place votes. Lubbock Christian (Texas) (6-0) second and HPU third. Nebraska-Kearney (10-0) is fourth, with Grand Valley State (Mich.) fifth.
Lander (S.C.) (6-0) is sixth, with Tusculum (Tenn.) (9-0) seventh, Minnesota-Duluth (3-0) eighth, Charleston (W.Va.) (4-0) ninth and Valdosta State (Ga.) (8-1) 10th.
Fellow PacWest Conference member Concordia Irvine (1-1) is 25th this week with Azusa Pacific and Biola receiving votes.
The Sharks, who are on a 28-game winning streak dating back to last season, have been ranked inside the top 10 in this poll already this season. However, because it ranked teams that had already cancelled or opted out of the season it was viewed as flawed. This week was the first that scrubbed non-playing institutions from consideration.
HPU plays its home games this weekend when the Sharks host Chaminade in PacWest Conference action on Saturday and Sunday. Both games are set to tipoff at noon at The Shark Tank on the former St. Francis School campus. Fans are not allowed into the gymnasium, but the games will be live streamed at hpusharks.com.
