IRVINE, Calif. – The PacWest Hawai'i winner Hawai'i Pacific University men collected six spots on the 2020-21 All-PacWest Conference Men's Soccer Team announced Wednesday by the conference office.
With the conference season played by pods this spring, each pod (Hawai'i, Southern California and Northern California) selected a team with the special awards selected by the entire conference.
HPU placed seniors Garrit Arzberger, Paul Enzingmueller, and
Ryo Hirayama, along with juniors
Makana Srivongsana and
Austin Stafford, and sophomore
Bradley Brooks on the 13-member team.
The Sharks were unbeaten at 3-0-1 in the pandemic shortened and moved spring season.
Arzberger, the 6-0 senior midfielder from Munich, Germany/Therese von Bayern, is the team captain for the Sharks. He was named to his second All-PacWest Conference Team, after being a first team All-PacWest selection in 2019.
Enzingmueller, a 6-0 senior midfielder from Zirndorf, Germany/Dietrich-Bonhoeffer Gymnasium, scored a goal and recorded two points on the season. He was the PacWest Player of the Week once this spring.
Stafford, a 5-10 junior forward from Federal Way, Wash./Beamer and a transfer from the closed Concordia-Portland, was the leading scorer for the Sharks this spring with three points on a goal and an assist. He was selected the first PacWest Hawai'i Player of the Week for his overtime goal against Chaminade in the first week.
Srivongsana, a 5-6 junior forward from Honolulu/Kaiser, pushed the attack for the Sharks this spring.
Hiroyama, a 5-8 senior defender from Fukuoka, Japan/Kyushu International, and Brooks, a 6-3 sophomore defender from Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista, led the HPU defense that led the PacWest Conference allowing only one goal on the season.
The 2020-21 PacWest Men's Soccer Awards were announced with the team, as Fresno Pacific's Fellipe Souza was honored as the PacWest Men's Player of the Year. Point Loma's Ryan Pierce was chosen as the PacWest Goalkeeper of the Year, with teammate Matthew Abangan the PacWest Defender of the Year. Academy of Art's Gilly Miller was tabbed the PacWest Newcomer of the Year and Point Loma coach Phil Wolf was voted the PacWest Coach of the Year.
