AIEA, Hawai'i – Hawai'i Pacific University's
Hasee Nazir and
Keita Okada are 1-2 and have HPU on top as a team after the first round of the Hawai'i Triangular on Saturday at Pearl Country Club.
Nazir, a sophomore from Orange, Calif./Orange Lutheran, fired a 2-under-par 70 for a one stroke lead over Okada, a freshman from Tokyo, Japan/Bradenton, Fla. IMG Academy, who carded a 1-under 71. Hawai'i Hilo's Nicholas Gomez and Chaminade's Schuyler Peterson are tied for third two strokes back at even-par 72, with HPU junior
Ryan Torres of San Jose, Calif./Evergreen Valley fifth at 1-oveer 73.
The Sharks are on top of the team leaderboard after posting a 2-over 290 in first round play, 15 strokes better than Chaminade at 305 and 18 in front of UH Hilo in third at 308.
Nazier posted four birdies and two bogies on the par 72, 6,787 yard PCC course, with birdies at the par 5 5th, the par 4 11th, the par 3 13th and par 4 14th. He bogeyed the par 4 7th and par 3 16th.
Okada had his only bogey on the par 5 12th hole, only to birdie the 13th and par 5 17th.
Sophomore Keli'i Kamelamela-Dudoit of Ho'olehua, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama shot a 4-over 76, while junior
Ray Kim of Aiea, Hawai'i/Moanalua rounded out the Sharks team contingent with a 5-over 77.
HPU also had four individuals playing, with senior
Tom Purcell of Liverpool, England/St. Mary's firing a 3-over 75 in seventh, and freshman
Noah Daher of Cottonwood, Ariz./Mingus Union adding a 7-over 79. Freshman Nate Gani of Lanai City, Hawai'i/Lanai carded an 84, and freshman Ian Kinsman of Vancouver, Wash./Prairie posted a 90.
The triangular concludes on Sunday at Pearl Country Club. Tee times begin at 7:42 a.m. in the team's last action before the PacWest Conference Championships at Waikoloa Beach Golf Course April 19-21.
