Box Score ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Hawai'i Pacific University opened a weekend tournament with a straight-sets loss to co-host Central Washington in the Central Washington-Seattle Pacific Invitational at Nicholson Pavilion.
The Sharks (0-5) fell to the Wildcats (2-2) 25-14, 25-20, 25-11 in the first of four matches split between Ellensburg and Seattle this weekend.
HPU hit just .040 with one team block in the match. CWU hit .356 with 9.0 team blocks in the hour-and-a half victory.
The Sharks were led by senior
Nicole Ferris of Woodstock, Ga./Etowah with five kills along with the assisted block. Senior
Kirah Boynton-Brown of Vancouver, Wash./Union hit .429 for the match, with three kills on seven attacks.
The Wildcats were paced by Marianna Payne with 12 kills and five blocks, while Ashley Kaufman double-doubled with 11 kills and 11 digs as she hit .429 for the match. Leanna Shymanski tallied nine kills on 10 attacks for a .900 hitting percentage and coupled it with four blocks.
The Sharks are back in action for the final time in Ellensburg on Friday when they meet Western Oregon at 2 p.m. HST (5 p.m. PDT) at Nicholson Pavilion before heading to Seattle to finish the tournament on Saturday.
