IRVINE, Calif. –Hawai'i Pacific University goalkeeper Jeremy Zielinsky was selected the PacWest Conference Men's Soccer Defender of the Week for his outstanding play this past weekend.
Zielinsky, a 6-3 senior from Sunnyvale, Calif./Homestead, shutout Hawai'i Hilo for the third time in his career as the Sharks defeated the Vulcans 1-0 in non-conference action last Saturday at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Zielinsky continued the goalless streak against the Vulcans by making four saves in the match, helping the Sharks earn their second win of the season. The Sharks scored the only goal of the game in the 53rd minute, which was enough for Zielinsky to work with. He held onto that 1-0 lead for the final 37 minutes of the match, facing 11 shots, including four that were on frame. It was Zielinsky's second shutout in a row after also shutting out Cal State East Bay last Sunday with three saves. He now has a 1.50 goals-against average on the season and 18 saves in 360 minutes played. He ranks second in the conference in saves this season.
Joining Zielinsky with the weekly PacWest honors is UH Hilo's David Mayser who scored both goals in leading the Vulcans to a 2-1 overtime win over Chaminade in UHH's season opener.
The Sharks (2-2) play again on Friday when they host Western Washington in a 6 p.m. match at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
