PLEASANTON, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University got off to a slow start to open the 2022 spring season, posting a two-round total of 622 at the Bay Area Invitational at The Club at Ruby Hill.
The Sharks are 13th, 11 strokes ahead of Chaminade in 14th at 633, and seven strokes behind Academy of Art in 12th at 615.
Sophomore
Keita Okada, from Tokyo, Japan/Bradenton, Fla. IMG Academy, leads the Sharks, posting an 8-over-par 152 for the two rounds on the par 72, 6,980-yard Ruby Hill layout. Okada opened with a 7-over 79 in the first round, but came back with a 1-over 72 for the 8-over 152. Senior
Ryan Torres of San Jose, Calif./Evergreen Valley a stroke behind Okada, posting a 9-over 153. Torres had a similar 79 to start, then added a 2-over 74.
The heartbreak for the Sharks was junior
Hasee Nazir of Orange, Calif./Orange Lutheran who fired a 3-over 75 in the first round, but suffered a 10-over 82 in the second round to sit at 153. . Junior Keli'i Kamelamela-Dudoit of Ho'olehua, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama carded a first round 84, then added a 5-over 77 for a 161 total, and senior
Ray Kim of Aiea, Hawai'i/Moanalua added an 83 and 86 for a 169. Freshman
Noah Daher of Cottonwood, Ariz./Mingus Union is playing as an individual and shot an 80-86 – 166 for the day.
Cal State San Marcos is on top of the team leaderboard at 5-under 571 after rounds of 284 and 287. Western Washington is second at 585, while Chico State is third at 587.
Individually, CSU San Marcos' Matt Pennington fired an amazing 10-under 134, with two rounds of 5-under 67 on Monday. Pennington is seven strokes in front of Chico State's Mike Stephens who is at 3-under 141 in second and WWU's Aidan Thain at 2-under 142 in third.
The final round of the tournament is Tuesday with a 6:30 a.m. HST (8:30 a.m. PST) shotgun start at Ruby Hills.
