LIVERMORE, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University sophomore
Keita Okada shot a final round 3-under-par 69 and junior Keli'i Kamelamela-Dudoit fired an even-par 72 as the duo placed first and third at the 2022 Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks Invitational at the Poppy Ridge Golf Course.
Okada, from Tokyo, Japan/Bradenton, Fla. IMG Academy, posted his second consecutive 69 in the tournament for a 6-under 138 on the par 72, 6,968 yard Poppy Ridge layout to win the event by three strokes over Cal State East Bay's Fraser Owenson who also shot a 3-under 69 on Tuesday to finish at 3-under 141. Kamelamela-Dudoit, of Ho'olehua, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama, played even throughout, finishing at even-par 144 with Cal State San Bernadino's Brian Nielsen and East Bay's Tommy Jernigan.
As a team, the Sharks slipped to finish in a tie for eighth, posting a 305 in the final round for a 607 to match host Northwest Nazarene.
It's the second tournament win of the year for Okada, the defending PacWest Conference Champion, and his fifth collegiate individual title. The sophomore has finished top four or better in eight of his 11 career collegiate tournaments.
For Kamelamela-Dudoit, it's the second top three finish in seven tournaments this season, and the fifth top three finish in his HPU career. It's also his ninth top six finish in his career.
Okada fired four birdies with one bogey in Tuesday's second round, with the par 4, 12th hole costing him a stroke for the second straight day. However he came back with a birdie at the par 5, 14th, and played par golf the rest of the way in.
Kamelamela-Dudoit was up-and-down during the round. He birdied three of the first four holes, then bogeyed two of the next three. He finished the front side with a birdie at the par 5, 9th. But the back nine saw bogeys on both of the par 3's that sent him in at even-par.
Senior
Ryan Torres of San Jose, Calif./Evergreen Valley carded a 7-over 79 to finish at 13-over 157, while
Ray Kim of Aiea, Hawai'i/Moanalua added an 85 for a 168 and junior
Hasee Nazir of Orange, Calif./Orange Lutheran came in with an 87 to total 172. Playing as an individual, freshman
Noah Daher of Cottonwood, Ariz./Mingus Union recorded a final round 83 for a 162.
Cal State East Bay won the team title, posting a 583, four strokes better than Cal State San Bernadino who had the tournament's best round at 285 to finish at 587. Montana State Billings finished third at 588.
The Sharks are back in action next week at Cal State East Bay's Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout on Monday and Tuesday at the Corica Park South Course in Alameda, Calif.
