IRVINE, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University's
Malia Torres was chosen this week's PacWest Conference Softball Player of the Week for her strong performance last week.
Torres, a 5-6 senior righthander from Danville, Calif./Monte Vista, needed just 72 pitches to throw a two-hit shutout on Sunday against Chaminade, leading the Sharks to a 2-0 victory. It was Torres' eighth victory of the season and third complete game with no earned runs allowed.
She struck out three batters and allowed just two walks as she relied on her defense, which only committed one error in the victory. Torres retired the side in order in each of the first three innings and got a groundout to open the fourth inning for 10 batters retired in a row. A fielding error ended the perfect game and then an infield single was the first hit allowed. However, Torres got a groundout and a strikeout to get out of the jam with no runs allowed. In the sixth inning, two runners got on with another infield single and a walk, but Torres again got a strikeout to end the threat. In the seventh inning, she retired the side in order again to complete the shutout. No base hit reached the outfield all game as Torres brought her ERA on the season down to 3.05 in 140 innings pitched.
Torres has an 8-12 record this season with two shutouts and 20 complete games in her 22 appearances in the circle. She has 55 strikeouts this season.
Joining Torres with weekly honors is Dominican's Lauren Lapinid as PacWest Softball Player of the Week.
The Sharks have two doubleheaders this week to close the home portion of their season. HPU meets Academy of Art on Friday and Saturday at Howard Okita Field. The first pitch each day is slated for Noon, with Senior Day activities following the contests on Saturday.
