IRVINE, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University's
Jakub Beran has been named the PacWest Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week, selected by the conference office for his strong play last week in Florida.
Beran, a 6-0 freshman from Drhovy, Czech Republic, won all three of his singles matches during HPU's trip to Florida and clinched the final two wins for the Sharks. After not playing on Thursday to illness, Beran returned to the lineup Friday to defeat the No. 62 player in NCAA Division II, winning at No. 4 singles 7-6, 6-4. The next day, the freshman clinched a 4-1 win over No. 3 Saint Leo, which led in the two remaining matches. Beran again won a first-set tiebreaker and then took the second set, 7-6, 6-3. He then clinched a third win over a top-10 opponent, beating West Florida with a three-set win at No. 4 singles. He dropped his first set of the week, but came back to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Beran is ranked 47th in doubles with partner
Robin Sanz has a 12-1 record at No. 2, while sporting a perfect 11-0 record in singles, primarily playing at No. 4.
Joining Beran this week is PacWest Women's Player of the Week Berta Acero of Cal State LA.
The No. 7 Sharks (14-1) return to play on Thursday in Surprise, Arizona at the 2022 PacWest Conference Championships. The top-seeded Sharks face eighth-seeded Fresno Pacific at 6 a.m. HST (9 a.m. MST) in the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex.
