IRVINE, Calif. – Hawai'i Pacific University's
Malia Torres was named the PacWest Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week for the second straight week for her strong performance over the weekend.
Torres, a 5-6 senior righthander from Danville, Calif./Monte Vista, pitched in all four games and didn't allow a single run in 16 innings pitched to help the Sharks win three of four games against Academy of Art.
In her starts, Torres threw two complete-game shutouts, earning two wins. She has now thrown complete-game shutouts in each of her last three starts, putting her shutout streak at 24.1 innings. In the month of April, she has lowered her ERA from 3.56 to 2.74 with four wins this month. Torres started the week with one inning in relief allowing just one hit to get through the inning with no runs allowed. She then pitched a complete game in the second game of the doubleheader to lead the Sharks to a 3-0 victory. She struck out two batters with six hits and one walk scattered. In the third game of the series, Torres again threw seven shutout innings with only six hits and no walks allowed. In the series finale, Torres needed only eight pitches to get through her inning of relief. She has now thrown 156 innings with a 10-12 record, 22 complete games in 26 apperances and 59 strikeouts.
The Sharks are in action again next Sunday when they take on cross-town rival Chaminade at Sand Island Field for CUH's Senior Day. First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
