(KANEOHE, HI) - It was a mix of emotions as the final HPU softball game played out at Howard A. Okita Field in Kaneohe. The scheduled doubleheader against Chaminade turned into a day filled with both joy and sorrow under the grey skies. Despite the rain, there were moments of laughter and camaraderie as players soaked the field with sponges, creating memories that will linger.
The intention was to celebrate Hoku Ching, the team's lone senior, with balloons, cake, and festivities. However, the day will be remembered more for its somber tone. The doubleheader was postponed, then condensed to one game, and eventually called off due to relentless rain. Both teams were eager to play, but nature had its way.
Despite the disappointment, coaches Jarnett Lono and Kent Yamaguchi exhibited grace by keeping their teams together to honor the field's legacy and their seniors. The field had been a home ground for the Sharks for over three decades, with the Silverswords also calling it home for a couple of years. Coach "Shorty" Lono and HPU extended leis and hugs to the Chaminade seniors, emphasizing the bonds between the players.
After recognizing Chaminade, the spotlight shifted to the Sharks and their farewell. Mrs. Okita expressed gratitude to Coach Lono, her staff, alumni, volunteers, and the team for their dedication. Despite the rain, she remained present, symbolizing the enduring spirit of the field, named after her late husband who nurtured it into existence. Emotional reminiscences followed, highlighting the field's history and community support.
In a poignant gesture, instead of the customary senior's last lap around the bases, each class took a turn, arm-in-arm, bidding farewell to the field in their own way. Smiles, tears, and music filled the air as players celebrated their time together. As Hoku completed her final lap, she was greeted at each base by her teammates, showering her with gifts and affection, a testament to her leadership and influence.
Amidst the aloha, respect, and love, there was also sadness, all set against the backdrop of the muddy field and majestic Norfolk Pines. While Sharks Softball may be relocating to Sand Island, the memories forged on this field will endure.
