Sharks Power Past CSLA as Fujinaka Earns 100th Career Win

WAIPAHU, Hawai'i — Hawai'i Pacific University Baseball delivered an offensive breakout Saturday afternoon at Hans L'Orange Park, defeating Cal State LA 13–5 to even the series and secure a milestone victory for Head Coach Dane Fujinaka, who earned the 100th win of his career in his fifth season at the helm of the Sharks.

After trading runs early, HPU took control with a decisive eight-run fourth inning, turning a 2–2 game into a commanding advantage. Tyler Arnold jump-started the rally with a two-run double, followed by run-scoring hits from Kan Taguchi and Brock Wirthgen. Christian Perez capped the inning with a two-run triple to center, pushing the Sharks in front 10–2.

The Sharks struck early in the first inning as Noah Hata and Blake Helsper each delivered RBI singles to answer Cal State LA's opening run. After the Golden Eagles briefly closed the gap in the fifth, HPU responded again in the sixth with three more runs, highlighted by an RBI single from Rylen Bayne and RBI walks drawn by Max Biehl and Arnold.

Taguchi finished the day 3-for-6 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Wirthgen reached base three times and drove in two. Perez went 1-for-1 with a triple and two RBIs, and Bayne added a pair of hits and an RBI as HPU totaled 12 hits and drew 11 walks.

On the mound, Jayden Gabrillo earned the win in relief, allowing two runs over 3.1 innings while striking out three. Andrew Nykoluk provided a strong start, surrendering just two unearned runs across 2.2 innings, and the Sharks bullpen combined to limit Cal State LA to five runs despite consistent pressure.

With the victory, Fujinaka becomes the fastest coach in program history to reach 100 career wins, a milestone that underscores the continued rise of HPU Baseball as it enters another competitive season.

The Sharks will look to carry the momentum forward into next week as they take on Saint Martins at home.
