IRVINE, Calif. — Hawai'i Pacific University Softball continued a challenging opening weekend Sunday, facing a pair of strong opponents in Western Washington and Cal State San Bernardino at the Irvine Kickoff.
In the morning matchup, the Sharks fell 13–0 to Western Washington. HPU showed discipline at the plate, drawing three walks and putting runners on base, highlighted by a triple from Jade Retuta to provide an offensive spark. Angelica Oseguera and Naomi Cummings combined in the circle, with Oseguera allowing just one earned run in her start despite early defensive miscues.
Western Washington capitalized on a big second inning to create separation, while HPU continued to compete defensively and limited additional damage across the middle innings.
Later in the day, the Sharks closed the weekend against Cal State San Bernardino, dropping an 11–0 decision. The Coyotes broke through with a solo home run in the fourth before pulling away with a big fifth inning.
Despite being held hitless, HPU continued to battle and showed patience at the plate, working a walk and forcing CSUSB pitchers to throw competitive innings. Lily Pardini started in the circle and kept the game scoreless through the first three frames before Cal State San Bernardino found momentum late.
Across the weekend, the Sharks gained valuable experience against nationally competitive programs while continuing to evaluate lineups and build depth early in the season.
Hawai'i Pacific will look to take the lessons learned into its next stretch of games as the Sharks continue nonconference play.
